Winnebago County tops 1,000 COVID-19 cases as spread slows

The COVID-19 numbers are trending in the right direction in Winnebago County, as the number of new cases was down again last week. There were 45 new positive cases reported in the county between Tuesday, Dec. 8 and Monday, Dec. 14, bringing the overall total to 1,031.

The number of active cases in the county fell by about 20% over the past week, with 274 active cases as of Monday. The percentage of tests that came back positive during the previous week was 13%. One additional death related to COVID-19 has been reported in Winnebago County, bringing the total to 26.

The coronavirus continues to circulate at a higher rate in Kossuth County, which saw 135 new cases between December 8-14 for a total of 1,372. There were 581 active cases of COVID-19 in the county as of Monday.

The number of deaths linked to the illness rose sharply in Kossuth County last week, with 14 additional deaths reported for a total of 23. This coincides with a change in how the State of Iowa documents COVID-19 deaths, as it now counts clinical diagnoses from doctors and antigen testing results.

Of the COVID-19 tests administered last week in Kossuth County, 18% came back positive.
