House fire in Buffalo Center
Three local fire departments worked through the night in subzero temperatures to put out a house fire in Buffalo Center. The Buffalo Center, Rake and Thompson Fire Departments responded to a call at 8:01 p.m. Thursday evening of a possible fire at 212 2nd St. NW. Crews confirmed the fire and determined that it had already caused too much structural damage to save the house, so they set about defending the surrounding properties as they extinguished the blaze. Buffalo Center Fire Chief Brian Blodgett says the last firefighters finally left the scene at about 10 a.m. Friday morning. The crews were successful in protecting the nearby buildings, including homes, garages and the Methodist church. Also nearby is the North Iowa Community School, where classes started two hours late Friday morning due to smoke from the fire. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
