Thompson braves the heat for milestone anniversary

It was a day 125 years in the making on Saturday, June 10, as Thompson, IA officially marked its 125th anniversary. The weather could have been better, as heat and strong winds interfered with some of the plans, but there were still nice crowds for the day’s activities.

Cathy Hughes headed up the eight-member Quasquicentennial Committee that spent the past three years planning the day’s events. She says the weather may have kept some people away, but those who attended had good things to say about the celebration. The committee did have to rearrange some things at the fairground in response to the weather, and they weren’t able to use the horse-drawn people mover because of the heat.

There was a great turnout for the all class reunion, which had gatherings at the Thompson school building and at the Branding Iron. “It was fun seeing people meet up that had graduated together or knew each other from school that hadn’t seen each other in a while,” said Hughes. “That was a lot of fun seeing the hugs and the smiles and the handshakes.”
