School recognizes Kakaceks as Homecoming Grand Marshals

Longtime vocal music instructor Dave Kakacek and his wife, Kate, have been selected as Grand Marshals of the 2019 Homecoming Parade at North Iowa Community School. The Homecoming Parade is this Friday afternoon, Sept. 20 starting at approximately 2:45 p.m. in Buffalo Center.

Dave spent his entire 34-year teaching career at North Iowa, as he came to Buffalo Center in January of 1973 and retired in 2007.

He and Kate are both natives of Hampton, and they got married just three or four days before he began teaching. He taught grades K-6 when he started, and he was one of two vocal music teachers at Buffalo Center, along with Luke Larson. When Larson retired in 1990, Kakacek took over teaching both elementary and high school vocal music.

Dave says he enjoyed teaching both the younger and older kids for different reasons. “With the little kids, you never know what’s going to happen or what they’re going to say,” said Dave. He says you never knew which class would come out on stage at a concert and do something to send the audience into an uproar. When it comes to the older students, Dave says he enjoyed the daily give and take of seeing and talking with the kids. He says it was always pleasing to put together a new song in four parts with the high schoolers.
