Runners open season in Mason City

The North Iowa cross country teams took part in their first meet of the year last Tuesday, Aug. 29, with the Newman Invitational in Mason City. North Iowa came away with one medal for the day, as they competed amongst 17 teams.

Both North Iowa teams were incomplete, with the boys’ runners including Jordan Boekelman, Kevin Hassebroek and Willie Roeder, while the girls’ team included Mia Blodgett, Faith Finer and Samantha Davis. Boekelman was a medalist in the varsity boys’ race with his 19th place finish. “He ran nearly a minute-thirty faster than last season in the same meet – which is very promising,” said Head Coach Jonathan Potter. “Kevin ran with an injured hip and battled hard the entire run. This was Willie’s first cross country race, and it was a quality learning experience for him.”
