Long overdue “Welcome Home” is well received

It took 40 years, but area veterans of the Vietnam War finally got the welcome home they deserve last weekend in Forest City.

Operation LZ, held August 26-30 at the combined location of Heritage Park, the WIT rally grounds and the Forest City Airport, was the culmination of 18 months of planning and was made possible thanks to dozens of volunteers and $250,000 in donations. Local veterans appreciated the effort that went into this meaningful and enjoyable experience.

“It’s quite a day,” said Steve Bosma of Buffalo Center, as he enjoyed the air show at the airport on Saturday. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam era. “It’s a long time coming for those that were in the thick of the battle – with what they had to go through over there, plus what they had to put up with back here when they came home.”

He said everyone he’s talked to has had a positive response to the event. “It’s good emotionally for the guys to get together with other people who went through the same stuff,” said Bosma. “Everybody’s thrilled and thinks it’s a very good thing.”
