Local artists advance to state contest

Three local painters are among the blue ribbon winners at the Iowa Artists’ Region 2 show in Buffalo Center. The show was held last Saturday, April 6 at the Heritage Town Center, featuring more than 40 entries.

Blue ribbon winners include: Marvella Blome of Thompson for her watercolor titled “Last Lap”, Sonja Johnson of Thompson with her oil on canvas titled “Girls Day Out”, Carol Jo Smidt of Buffalo Center with her oil painting “Mares on the Move”, and John Nehl of Garner with a self-portrait.

The judge for the show was Maureen Seamonds of Webster City, who also did a demonstration in the morning. Seamonds has taught art at Iowa State University, Drake University, and Iowa Central, and she has a studio in Webster City called Produce Station Pottery. She also conducts art workshops, and she holds a Master’s in Art degree from Iowa State and a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Iowa.
