Lakota’s 4th Annual Picnic in the Park this Saturday

The 4th annual Picnic in the Park will be held this Saturday, July 23 in Lakota. There are fun events planned for the entire day and evening.

First up is the 5K Obstacle Race Run/Walk at 8:00 a.m. sponsored by the Lakota Quasqui Committee. Registration will begin at 7:15 a.m. at the City Park. Pre-registration guarantees a t-shirt, and some shirts will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis that morning. Medals will be awarded for first and second place winners in age groups of 13-20, 21-29, 30-39, 40-49 and 50 plus. Door prizes will also be given to the participants. Everyone is welcome to attend and enjoy the event at their own pace.

Back by popular demand to this year’s event is the Classic Car/Bike/Tractor Show, sponsored by Road Runners. The show starts at 2:00 p.m. on Main Street and will go until 5:00 p.m. First place winners will receive trophies in each division, and second and third place winners will receive medals. All participants will be given dash plaques for signing up. FrogNix Entertainment will be playing oldies tunes during the show. Road Runnner’s will be open at this time.

Starting at 3:30 p.m., there will be a Kiddie Carnival in the City Park, which runs until 5:30 p.m. There are many fun games planned for people of all ages. There will be face and hair painting, a balloon pop, photo booth, duck pond, football toss, hole in one, and much more. A small fee will be charged for the Carnival.

New this year is Human Foosball, which is sponsored by the Quasqui Committee. This tournament style event will fill the afternoon with laughs and fun.

Music in the Park will begin at 4:30 p.m. and will feature various groups and local hometown talent, Morgan Kahler. This entertainment can be enjoyed until 8:00 p.m.

The Board of Trustees and the Library Board Director, along with the Quasquicentennial Committee, are planning a delicious meal to be served in the Fire Hall this year, from 5:30 until 7:30 p.m. The menu will consist of grilled, pulled pork, prepared by the Perch Bakery, for sandwiches, with BBQ sauce donated by CountrySide BBQ Company from Algona. There will also be baked beans, potato chips, cookies, lemonade and coffee. The meal is offered for a free will donation for the library and upcoming Quasquicentennial celebration scheduled for July 21-23, 2017.

The final event planned by the Quasquicentennial leadership will include a beer garden located at Road Runners Bar & Grill on Main Street opening at 6:00 p.m. The street dance will start at 9:00 p.m., featuring the Down to Earth Band, hailing from Swea City. This is the first trip to the Picnic in the Park event for the Down to Earth Band. The dance will run until 1:00 a.m.

Everyone is invited to come to Lakota to enjoy the food, visit with neighbors and friends and enjoy the games. For more information on the upcoming Quasquicentennial, contact City Hall or search for Lakota, Iowa Quasquicentennial on Facebook.
