International visitors cycle through Buffalo Center

Buffalo Center isn’t typically a hotspot for tourists, but four visitors from England stopped in town Friday, Sept. 8 during a coast to coast cycling tour through the United States.

Four friends who graduated this year from the University of Cambridge decided to embark on an adventure across the United States this summer and fall before finding jobs. Alex Clark, Jonny Dawe, Alex Johnson and Andy McMahon arrived in New York City on August 1 for a four month, 4,000 mile journey that will take them all the way to San Francisco by bicycle.

“I wouldn’t say any of us did cycling as a sport or a hobby particularly before this trip,” said Alex Clark, who is serving as the group’s expedition leader. “We did a bit of commuting whilst we were at college, because Cambridge is quite a cycling city, so everyone cycles.”

Clark has done a similar trip in the past, when he cycled from Barcelona, Spain to Rome, Italy. It was his idea to take a trip across the United States. He said it was appealing because they get to visit a lot of cities and see how the country changes from one place to another. He says there are also many natural wonders, and they get to see a lot of history. “We’re tracking history in a sense, because the country was settled by the Europeans in the east to west direction,” said Clark.
