Fire Department hosts annual family night

The Buffalo Center Volunteer Fire Department continued an annual tradition on August 14, as it brought all the firemen and their families together for a meal. This year’s meal was held in conjunction with the annual joint meeting with the BC City Council and the Rural Fire Board, and those groups were invited to join in the festivities.

Sweet corn for the meal is donated by the families of Mark and Doug Ostermann. While some of the firemen have the sweet corn cooking, families of the firemen get to take a ride around on the fire trucks and learn what a fireman does at the station. Kids have the opportunity to spray water and try on the firemen’s coats.

Buffalo Center Fire Chief Brian Blodgett says it’s nice to see the families of the firemen get together.

“Being on the fire department is a commitment in time for the firemen, but it also a commitment for their families,” said Blodgett. “Families are woken up at 2 a.m. when the pager goes off, deal with their stinky and dirty firemen after the call, as well as help in many ways including with fundraisers. It is an exceptional group of people, and I’m glad to be a part of it.”
