Council supports plan for pickle ball courts

The Buffalo Center City Council gave its blessing last week for residents to pursue adding pickleball courts to Lions Park. Judy Boeckholt is spearheading the effort to plan and seek funding for two pickleball courts that would likely replace half the tennis court.

Boeckholt spoke to the council at their monthly meeting on September 11 to discuss options. She explained that pickleball is similar to badminton or ping pong and is played using rackets and a whiffle ball. The ball moves slower than in similar sports, making the game more accessible to people of all ages.

Boeckholt has been looking into the potential costs for the project, including options to replace part of the tennis court or to install a new patch of cement somewhere. Each pickleball court would measure 44’x20’. Boeckholt received quotes from Langfald Construction for installing a court. Replacing a 120’x37’ section of the tennis court with concrete would cost around $25,688, including disposal costs. The cost to pour a single standalone 44’x20’ concrete slab is about $5,406.
