Beenken is new Winnebago County Attorney

Kelsey Beenken of Buffalo Center will serve as the new Winnebago County Attorney, as she was selected for appointment by the Winnebago County Board of Supervisors. Former Winnebago County Attorney Adam Sauer resigned the position in January, as he has taken a new position as associate judge for District 2A in northern Iowa. The supervisors interviewed four candidates for the county attorney position, and they voted to appoint Beenken to the job on February 27.

Beenken currently serves as a magistrate judge for Hancock County and works at Earl W. Hill Law Firm in Britt. She started at Earl Hill as an intern in 2012, while she was attending law school at the University of Iowa. After receiving her law degree in 2013, she came back to work at Earl Hill. She was appointed part-time magistrate for Hancock County in January of 2014. She explains that the magistrate is essentially the lowest level judicial position, which handles things like misdemeanor crimes, mental health committals, and bail hearings.

Beenken will wrap up her current jobs on Friday, March 16, and her first day as Winnebago County Attorney will be Monday, March 19. She says she’s looking forward to the new opportunity.
